Edo LP Candidate Picks Another Running Mate
Ahead of the September 21 governorship polls in Edo, The Labour Party (LP) candidate, Olumide Akpata, has dropped his former running mate Mrs Alufokhai Oluyinka, and picked a fellow lawyer from Etsako, West Prince Kadiri Yussufu Asamah SAN as his new running mate.
Alufokhai is from the Owan axis of Edo North Senatorial district, while the new running mate, Prince Kadiri Yussuf Asamah (SAN) is from the Etsako axis of the same senatorial district and hail from the Auchi royal family.
Asamah who is the first from the royal family to be so honoured, was quickly picked to beat the INEC deadline and to re-strategise, putting in mind the political calculations.
The electoral law allows for the replacement of any candidate from any political party during the placement period before the official kickoff of campaign on the 24th of this month.
Prince Asamah hails from Auchi’s choice as the deputy governorship candidate of his party, which has made him the second person from Auchi to receive such a nomination.
The first was Engr Saliu Ahmed, the deputy governorship candidate to Emmanuel Arigbeosula of the All Nigerian Peoples Party, ANPP.
The Edo LP leaders and their gubernatorial candidate may have re-evaluated their political strategy and decided to make some minor adjustments to change the political landscape while also giving the party a solid footing in the Edo North district, where the APC holds significant influence.
It is worth noting that Asamah has an impressive track record. Prior to his nomination, he served as a partner and head of the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Practice Group at the law firm of Jackson, Etti & Edu.
However, his extensive experience and expertise in civil and commercial litigation, arbitration, mediation, negotiation, and regulatory compliance may have made him the choice for the Labour Party.
The nomination of Asamah as the LP running mate to Akpata has caused a mix of excitement and concern within the Auchi political circles.
The duo are like their PDP counterpart with two lawyers: Asue Ighodalo as candidate, and Osarodion Ogie as running mate.
