The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new dimension, Monday, March 27, 2023 following the suspension of its National Chairman, Dr. Iyochia Ayu.
The suspension was carried out by the Benue State leadership of the party for what it tagged, “anti-party activities”.
This was sequel to a vote of no confidence by the Executive Committee of the PDP in Igyorov Ward of Gboko local government area of Benue state, which suspended Ayu on Sunday, March 26, for anti-party activities.
Reacting, the governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, who has been at logger heads with Ayu over the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as presidential candidate of the PDP.
Wike had contended that since Atiku who is from the north emerged presidential candidate of the party, Ayu should relinquish his position as national chairman of the party because both positions cannot be occupied by northerners.
While backing the suspension, Wike said Ayu was behind the downfall of the PDP in the just concluded 2023 elections.
Wike, who was a guest on the Channels TV programme, Sunrise Daily, said: “I am in support of the suspension.
“In fact if he (Ayu) had left before now, they would have said he has left and that was why the PDP failed the election.”
