Israel Njemanze popularly known as Nwaọba, was a pioneering Nigerian highlife musician born on December 25, 1922, in Amaawom, Owerri, in present day Imo State.

He was born as a member of the Njemanze royal family. He gained fame as the lead vocalist of the band “The Three Night Wizards”, active between 1949 and 1955.

Njemanze was celebrated for his sharp wit, satirical lyrics, and fearless social commentary, often addressing political figures and societal issues through his music.

Tragically, his life was cut short when he was murdered on April 8, 1955, at the age of 32. His dismembered body was discovered near railway tracks in Ebute- Meta, Lagos, leading to a high-profile case in which six individuals, including members of his band, were convicted and executed for his murder.

Despite his untimely death, Njemanze’s legacy endures, with his contributions to Nigerian highlife music remembered for their brilliance and impact.
