The Supreme Court has declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ademola Adeleke, as winner of Osun State Governorship election.
According to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Supreme Court has scheduled the decision for Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at 2 pm.
On Monday, a five-member Supreme Court panel heard arguments from attorneys for both sides before announcing the time and date for the decision.
In his lawsuit before the supreme court, Oyetola is attempting to have the Court of Appeal’s March 25 ruling in Abuja, which upheld Adeleke’s victory in the July 16 governorship election in Osun State, overturned.
An earlier ruling of the Osun Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which favored Oyetola and dismissed Adeleke, had been overturned by the Appeal Court in its ruling.
The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Adeleke was initially proclaimed the election’s victor by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
A tribunal panel headed by Justice Tertse Kume overturned Adeleke’s victory and declared Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner on January 27, 2023, which created a considerable uproar in the political environment.
Nevertheless, a panel of the Appeal Court presided over by Justice Mohammed Shaibu overturned the tribunal’s ruling on March 24, restoring Adeleke’s triumph and making the situation even more complicated.
The issue of the legitimate Governor of Osun State was finally resolved by the Supreme Court as it declared Adeleke, the winner of the election.
