A Nigerian media personality and political commentator, Shehu Gazali Sadiq, has said that one day Hushpuppi will leave the US prison and come back to Nigeria and he will be eligible to contest.
Recall that Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi, was arrested in the United Arab Emirates in 2020 for crimes of defrauding victims of $24million and is currently in the United States Jail.
Gazali was based on the recent lawsuit against the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, and president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinunbu and the response by the leading Political party.
There has been allegations of forfeiture of funds in the United States by the president Elect which has made several public figures opine the ineligibility of Tinubu to contest for the presidential position.
The All Progressive Congress (APC) in a response, maintained that the outcome of the inquiry filed at the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), made through the Inspector General of Police, cleared the candidate to contest for the February 25 polls.
It further argued that the said forfeiture Tinubu made to the US government, having lasted a period of 29 years, was no longer a valid ground to challenge his eligibility to contest the presidential election.
However, Gazali on his official Twitter handle, opined that the recent response given to the public by the leading party, sets low the bar to run for public office.
In his words: Hushpuppi will leave the US prison one day and come back to Nigeria and he will be eligible to contest presidential election because his conviction was in the US court and not in Nigerian court according to APC. This is how low the bar of public office has become under the APC.”
