The President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero was on Wednesday in Owerri, capital of Imo State, rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri as result of the injuries he sustained during his alleged encounter with security agencies.
His right eye said to be completely shut while he was being rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention.
Speaking on the incident, the NLC Head of Information and Publicity, Comrade Benson Upah, described what happened to Ajaero as an act of abduction that degenerated into attempted murder.
He said that “contact has been made with Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero this evening around 15:30 hours at the Police Hospital in Owerri from where he was taken to Federal Medical Centre, Owerri where he is presently receiving medical attention.
“Thoroughly brutalized, his right eye at the time of contact was completely shut.”
According to Upah, “Ajaero, who said little stated that immediately after his arrest, he was beaten up and blindfolded and taken to an unknown destination where more brutality took place, sometimes with bottles.
“His phones, money and other personal effects were taken off him and have not been returned to him
It was gathered that the Imo State Command of the Nigerian Police has swiftly deployed operatives to protect the NLC President from a scuffle, ensuring his life and safety.
Information further gathered, noted that Ajaero was picked up from the NLC State Council Secretariat in Owerri by heavily armed policemen and taken to an unknown destination.
“Comrade Joe Ajaero, the brutalised President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has been transported to the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Owerri, with his right eye completely shut”, Upah declared.
