NAFDAC Preaches on Dangers of drug abuse, use of potassium Bromate to Bake
The National Agency for Food and Drug Adminstration and Control(NAFDAC) has carried it’s sensitization campaign on the dangers of drug abuse, use of potassium bromate and other dangerous practices, saying they are not good for human health.
The agency stated this in Benin City, Nigeria at yesterday in Benin City, Nigeria, at a two-day sensitization campaign, selected to hold in eight stated of the country.
At the event were representsatives of the Edo State Ministry of Health, the Nigerian Police, the Federal Road Safety Corps,the Nigerian Bakers Association, various youth bodies among others.
Speaking at the event, the Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Moji Christiana Adeyeye said the public awareness campaign is one of the veritable regulatory mechanism put in place by the drug and food regulatory agency to promote and protect the health of Nigerians against the effects of unwholesome food, falsified medical products, harmful cosmetics, poor water and substandard products.
Adeyeye who was represented by NAFDAC Director of Nacotics and Controlled Substance, Dr. Umar Musa, said the dissemination of food and drug safety information is an important aspect of the agency’s regulatory work.
According to her, The key objectives of the sensetization programme is to intesify and expand the scope of our informal and formal behaviour, change communication strategies in order to reach the vulnerable communities especially at the grassroots.
“The sensitization campaigns will therefore contribute significantly to federal government concerted efforts to inform, sensitize, educate and alert the public about inherent dangers of intake and use of those spurious regulated products. These includes the danger of buying medicine from hwakers, abuse of codeine and self medication, mostly among the youths, the danger of using kerosene tanker to load groundnuts oil
“Another dangerous trend is the practice of using potassium bromate to bake bread, also people use Azo-dye in palm oil which causes cancer.There is also dangers in using sniper to preserve any type of food or to keep flies away from meat.”
She said the agency is collaborating with the mass media, youth organisations, civil societies, market women, road transport workers/employers and students among others for the campaign.
