Human Trafficking: NAPTIP Empowers Three Survivors, 12 Undergoing Training in Edo

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Person (NAPTIP), on Wednesday empowered three survivors of human trafficking in Edo State.

Speaking during the empowerment in Benin, the Commander, NAPTIP’s Zonal office, Nduka Nwanwenene, said the beneficiaries completed their training programme at its skill acquisition centre.

He said, “The beneficiaries were trained in fashion and design, hair dressing and catering and were certified fit to start their own business.

“The beneficiaries have gone through different forms of exploitations before they were rescued by NAPTIP and they are being empowered so that they will have a means of livelihood and would no longer be vulnerable to trafficking.

“NAPTIP is not just arresting and prosecuting trafficker but also empower victims, so that they won’t be vulnerable to trafficking any more.

“Our Director General, Dr. Fatima Waziri-Azi is passionate about empowering survivors of human trafficking. Today, we are empowering them with sewing machine dryer and their accessories as well as catering items.”

He said that 15 survivors are currently undergoing skill acquisition at its shelter and would be empowered after completing the training.

He, however, charged the beneficiaries to make good use of the items given to them so that they can become self reliant and employers of labour, noting that some of the past beneficiaries have become employers are currently doing well.

Also speaking, Olumide Dosunmu, the Edo State Coordinator, National Human Right Commission, charged the beneficiaries not to sell the items but utilize the opportunity to be successful in life.
