The popular Agege Bread know for its softness even after several days was a delight to all Lagosians and those who have travelled to Lagos.
At a time, the bread became a request by relatives to their person who wants to travel to Lagos to “make sure you buy Agege Bread. Such became the value placed on it by lovers of the delicacy.
The bread is so good that when laced with “Ewa Agoyin”, a special beans cocked by women from Togo and Benin Republic, is more sumptuous to eat.
However, many perhaps hardly know the origin of a once king of Lagos bread.
Information gathered from the archives by Towncriernews said the Master baker was a man called Amos Shackleford (1887-1954).
Shackleford was born in Jamaica and relocated to Lagos in 1913 at the age of 26 when joined the Nigerian Railway.
He was said to have went back to Jamaica after his 3 years contract with Nigerian Railway expired. He later returned to Nigeria in 1918 to became Head Clerk for a Nigerian owned firm- S. Thomas & Co.
A source from Histfeed, disclosed that during this period, Shackleford set up a bakery in Agege Lagos. This bread was called “Shackleford bread” or “Agege bread”.
