Guyanese-British musician Edmond Montague known by his stage name: “Eddy Grant” is 74 years today.
The founding member of the musical group, the Equals, was born March 5, 1948.
He is also known for a successful solo career that includes the platinum single “Electric Avenue” and pioneered the genre ringbang and soca.
Grantโ€™s musical life has span for more 50 years beginning from his success as a teenager in the 1960s with the Equals.
He quit the band after a car accident and a heart attack at the age of 23. Then he built his own studio, “ICE” transitioning from a touring life to the production side of the music business. The first Black to own a record studio in London.
However, after some vocal lessons he began a solo career, which led to even greater success with songs like โ€œElectric Avenue,โ€ and โ€œI Donโ€™t Wanna Dance,โ€ the latter of which he is convinced would have been a bigger hit in the US if only โ€œElectric Avenueโ€ wasnโ€™t such a hit.ย
As proof he points to the following video from Glastonbury in 2008. His music career continues to this day.
Many Happy Returns Eddy Grant!
