Benin’s Celebrate Igue-Edhia

Igue-Edohia is one of the core programme of IGUE FESTIVAL designed by our revered Palace for all BENINS (Edos) and residents to offer thanks and prayers to God Almighty and our Ancestors with kolanuts, coconut, drinks etc for protecting them throughout the outgoing year and asking for continuous protection for coming years ahead.

At the commencement of Igue-Edohia, every landlords and members of community will assemble at Odionwere house where they will offer thanks and prayers to God Almighty and our Ancestors before moving from house to house in repetition of the same thanks and prayers they offered to God Almighty and our Ancestors in their Odionwere house.

It is such a unique event that bonds Community Members together in peace and harmony.

In some communities, the ceremony is conducted at the family level. Each family head is expected to organize his own ceremony assisted by members of the extended family members at night. The body cannot exist without the head through which good fortunes and favors are received. 

The entire community will be expected to assemble at the village square in the afternoon for the ceremonial chasing of Ubi, symbolizing evil out of the society. And then comes the singing and dancing and sharing of ‘Ewere’ leaf, the leaf symbolizes good wishes for the year similar to greeting card. Please, never abandon your culture for anyone else in the name religion. Everyone is identified by his unique culture and that explains why all religions are culture-centered.
