Aladja Community Demands IGP’s Action Against Police Officers Over Escape of Arrested Suspects in Custody

The Aladja Community in Udu Local Government area of Delta State has called petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, and the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Surajudeen Olufemi Abaniwonda against the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at the Ovwian/Aladja Police Station on Saturday.
The community who gave the names of escaped suspects as Ovakporaye Jobome (aka Rogers) and Debi from Police custody, also wanted the police chiefs to investigate the circumstances that led the escape of the suspects from custody.
According to investigation, the suspects, known for terrorizing Aladja community and its environs, were arrested by the Aladja Security Crack Team (ASCT) following an increase in criminal activities in the area.
The ASCT, as further gathered, apprehended four suspects, including Ovakporaye Jobome (aka Rogers), Debi, Kelvin Dukuye, and Philip Faka, along with ammunition, and handed them over to the DPO of Ovwian/Aladja Police Station on December 31, 2024.
The handover was said have been facilitated by Secretary of Udu Local Government Council, Hon. Andrew Ekwetafia Gbise JP, as the suspects made confessional statements in video and audio.
According to reports, the Executive Chairman of Udu Local Government Council, Olorogun Vincent Ogheneruemu Oyibode JP FCIA, had earlier informed the DPO of the arrests before the suspects were transferred to police custody. The DPO delegated the case to DCO I for handling.
However, in a shocking development on Saturday, January 4, 2025, officers from the Ovwian/Aladja Police Station, including DCO I Inspector Queen and DCO 4 and others visited the Aladja Community to inform them that two of the suspects, Ovakporaye Jobome (aka Rogers) and Debi, had escaped detention.
To this end, the Aladja Community Council expressed outrage over the escape, alleging foul play and negligence on the part of the police officers. They emphasized that the two escaped suspects are among the most dangerous criminals in the area and called for their immediate re-arrest.
The community is therefore, urging the Inspector General of Police and the Delta State Commissioner of Police to hold the DPO and his team accountable for the escape and ensure that the suspects are brought to justice.
This incident has further heightened concerns about the effectiveness of law enforcement in addressing security challenges in Aladja and its surrounding areas. The community has demanded swift action to restore public trust and prevent further criminal activities.
