Consequent upon Supreme Court ruling barring the Federal Government from giving allocations to local government councils led by appointed officials rather than elected ones, some states LGA’s would not be receiving any funds from the federation account.

It would be recalled that Justice Emmanuel Agim, who read the apex court verdict, directed that local government funds should no longer be paid through state governments, stating that governors have misused and abused the process.

He pointed out that governors have been retaining and utilizing these funds improperly, which negatively affects the local government councils and development at the grassroots.

Against this backdrop therefore, the 20 states that lack elected local government officials will be barred from receiving funds from the federation account beginning from July until they hold elections.

The affected states are Jigawa, Rivers, Anambra, Imo, Kwara, Zamfara, Bauchi, Plateau, Abia and Enugu.

Others are Katsina, Kano, Sokoto, Yobe, Ondo, Osun, Delta, Akwa-Ibom, Cross River and Benue.

The 36 states and the FCT received N293.82bn from the federal government on behalf of the 774 local government areas in the country for the month of June.
